There is quite a big fan base for the Paper Mario franchise and while the series had its ups and downs, there is a brand new entry coming out for the Nintendo Switch platform. Nintendo unveiled Paper Mario: The Origami King, the sixth installment to the series. Similar to the past installments, this is an RPG title where players take the role of Mario as he battles against foes and solves puzzles while exploring the world. In this particular installment, players will be introduced to a new enemy to face against, King Olly.
King Olly has sought to conquer the world and bending everyone to his control by turning everyone and everything into origami. During his invasion, King Olly has taken over Princess Peach along with Bowser’s Army. Now the once enemies are having to team up and go against King Olly to save their world and friends. However, they will also have the help of a King Olly’s sister, Olivia, who is also hoping to prevent King Olly from taking complete control over the world.
After having to endure a year of no new installments to the Assassin’s Creed franchise, Ubisoft is preparing a release of Assassin’s Creed Valhalla. The game will take place in the Viking era where players step into the role of a raider as they expand their empire. While details are still a bit scarce, we know that there will be a play on Norse mythology along with players once again having the ability to alter the storyline a bit with the choices made. When players start the game they will have the ability to customize the protagonist Eivor which can be either a male or female. Of course, the game will also take the same mechanics as Assassin’s Creed Odyssey with the variety of weapons and gear sets you’ll be able to find along your journey.
There are a few changes from the past mainline installment. For one, we know that there is some type of a settlement area to the game which players can build up and upgrade. It’s said to play a big role in the game not only for your people but also it’ll matter who you bring to the area from the game campaign. Additionally, one of the biggest issues players had with Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was the fact that there was a level progression system attached to the main campaign. This ultimately resulted in players not being able to complete a certain mission due to not meeting the recommended level suggestion. In order to complete the missions, players could do a series of side quests to get XP though that’s not something you’ll have to do with Valhalla. Instead, the game can be completed by progressing the main campaign right away, although there will be side quests available as well if you wish to explore the world map.
Wasteland released back in 1988 for the PC by developers Interplay Productions and while the game was supposed to receive sequels, the developers never progressed any further after the original installment. Years later, however, we finally got a Wasteland 2 from developers inXile Entertainment with Wasteland 3 set to launch in 2020. Wasteland 3 takes place in the frozen land of Colorado where gamers step into the shoes of the last surviving member of a Ranger Squad. With turn-based combat, gamers can freely explore the world and progress alone or with the help of a friend thanks to the title featuring both synchronous and asynchronous multiplayer. Not too many details have been shared about the game but the developers did state on the official website that gamers will be presented with story arcs featuring difficult moral choices.
Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord, is a prequel to the first installment, taking place a couple of hundred years earlier. Much like the last installment, you can expect everything from siege gameplay, working with an economy, to even crafting weapons. This game may have a focus on PvP but you can still expect a campaign. Best of all, there appears to be a modding engine planned for this game so you’re likely going to find some rather cool add-ons and even campaign content. There is a ton of creative people out there that will likely deliver some mods worth downloading for the game. While this game does have a 2020 release noted above, this is a reference to the Early Access planned. It’s uncertain if this game will see a launch outside of the Early Access but you’ll at least get to start enjoying the game next year.
Final Fantasy, in general, is a massive RPG series that fans have been enjoying for decades however there are a few particular installments that seem to be put on a pedestal. One of those is Final Fantasy VII, a game that released for the PlayStation that followed Cloud Strife and his attempts at stopping the corrupt Shinra megacorporation. The narrative was beloved and fans for years have been asking Square Enix to remake the game for current-generation platforms. Square Enix finally caved in and decided to give Final Fantasy VII a remake for the PlayStation 4 and now we’re getting close to the official launch date.
For the most part, the Final Fantasy VII video game narrative will remain intact so you’ll see get the big moments and surprises that we’ve experienced years ago. With that said, there are a few changes you will notice such as the combat mechanics. This is no longer a turn-based RPG but instead an action RPG like how you would experience the combat in the Kingdom Hearts franchise. Furthermore, the game will not launch completely but instead will release in parts, similar to episodic games like the Life is Strange franchise. At the time of writing this, it has yet to be revealed just how many parts the game will be made up of.
CD Projekt Red made a name for themselves with The Witcher trilogy. This was a fantastic RPG experience that players got to experience over the course of a few years. Now that the video game trilogy has come to an end, the development studio is gearing up for their next big open-world RPG release, Cyberpunk 2077. Set in the distant future in a world that is fueled by greed and crime, players will step into the role of a mercenary named V. You’re just trying to make a living and it’s going to cause you to take on odd jobs in order to build up the street cred granting access to the bigger and better-paying gigs.
As mentioned this is an open-world RPG but one that will have players replaying a few times rather than exploring endless on the same run. The development team is providing players with a campaign that allows you to decide how to accomplish various tasks and missions. For instance, there is a slew of augmentations that you can incorporate onto V and it’s with these augmentations that will tweak your gameplay style. Furthermore, this RPG will have a few different endings and even origin stories to complete so we’re expecting plenty of replay value when the game launches in April of 2020.
